Exclusive interview

Omar Just

Hip-Hop artist, Omar Just!

Where did you grow up? I Was born and raised in Brooklyn NYC.

What inspired you to get into music? The love of rapping and putting words together and the energy and attitude of being who you are.

Do you write and produce music? I just write but would love to have the time to learn how to produce.

What is a songwriting session like for you? I usually buy a track, listen to it, then write to it. I let the sound and vibe of that track tell me what I should write about.

What are your feelings on the state of Hip-Hop these days? The art of rap and real rap is still here, it's just not getting promoted by radio anymore. Drama sells. Drill music is big even though dudes is getting killed over it. And Trap too, because there's still a lot of drug dealing in our hoods, so as long as that goes on, Trap will relate to many. I just do me and keep it real with who I am.

What is your local music scene like right now in Jersey City? From NYC to JC is all the same. Only festivals now. Many hip-hop spots or clubs that had local hip-hop shows all closed down.

Do you write for other artists? No, I don't write for other artists.

Do you perform live often? I used to do showcases but haven't performed in a long time.

Tell us about your latest project. I was working on my album, but I stopped due to financial reasons. I had surgery from a small injury and wasn't working, so my money went dry. My mother had her surgery recently as well.

What can we expect from you in the future? If I can, I would like to finish this album. Let's see what happens.
